Everything is Better with Music

Although Mervin doesn’t have a whole lot of spare time, if he could take a break at least he has a borrowed guitar to play.

I first painted the guitar case in a lightened black ( added a bit of grey ) and then highlighted some of the scars in the case with even lighter grey.  I added some raw sienna and yellow ochre to dirty things up a bit before dry brushing with beige.  Everything got the usual satin polyurethane finish for sealing.

The little bumper stickers show that whoever’s moving has attended at least one jamboree and square dance!

Some Paint Added

Below are a few items that I’ve painted so far.  I’ve stained the furniture much the same way as you would stain full size furniture and then have used a lot of browns and yellow ochre to give the furniture an aged and used look.  Everything is followed by a light dry brushing of an ivory/beige colour and a final coat of satin polyurethane.

Ready to Start Painting

I still have a few things to tidy up on the carving portion of this project, but I’m itching to start painting so I thought that I’d put the knives away for a while and pull out the paint brushes next.  Here’s what I’ve accomplished recently…

The lamp stand now has a lampshade made of brass.  I used a .010″ thickness of brass sheet and soldered the one edge to create the open ended cone for the shade.  Brass sometimes isn’t the easiest thing to solder, but I find that if I really burnish the surface up with sandpaper and then use a torch and solder ( rather than a soldering gun ), I can get a pretty good bond.

I also added a bit more interest to the birdcage that I carved by opening up the bottom portion a bit and inserting some copper wire to resemble the cage.  I also soldered a small washer over a short piece of copper wire and with a bit of bending and hammering ended up with a pretty reasonable looking hook.  With a few wrinkles carved into the wood, it’s starting to look like a cloth draped over the cage.

So, prior to some dabbing of paint, this is what it’s looking like.  I’ve added an old-time vacuum cleaner and the little bird that escaped the cage prior to packing.  You won’t be able to tell from this photo, but the cat’s eyes are now less evil thanks to Peggy’s prompting…

A Troublesome Friend

I just needed to add a dog somehow and decided that a mutt of some kind could possibly add to Mervin’s troubles.

I’m starting with clay again just to get the right pose down before I start into the wood carving.  This little dog will be tugging away at a sack of dog chow on Mervin’s load.

The addition of the dog is two-fold, really.  The  idea of it trying to keep the chow will help tell the story of moving, but it will also provide a third support for the carving…Mervin’s two feet and the dog.  I may even drill a long hole and install a rod or screw from the base of the carving up through the dog’s mouth and into the sack to give greater strength to the overall carving.

Here’s the start to the clay sculpture.  There could be a bit of Spaniel, Lab and Basset in this little guy.  You artists and dog lovers chime in…does the pose look right?

Everything but…

…the kitchen sink.  Actually, I was prompted by a couple of fellow carvers to be sure to include the kitchen sink ( thanks Lynn and Roger ).

It’s hard to imagine a grown man playing around for half a day with a block of wood and putting together pieces of washers and what-not to come up with a 1930’s style sink and faucet…but that’s what I did today and enjoyed every minute of it.

Once it’s painted a porcelain white with some copper coloured paint on the faucet, it’s going to look really nice.

Hobby Day

Paul and I decided we’d have a hobby day today.  So, after I cleared the snow ( 5″ overnight ), we sat down to some tv watching, colouring and carving.  Paul’s a very good artist and enjoyed colouring his Minion’s colouring book.

Not to be outdone, I started into carving a chair from two basswood blanks that I cut out on the bandsaw.

I’m just going to keep carving up these little items and piling them onto Mervin’s load.  Poor Mervin.  Looks like the strain is starting to show on him.

On With the Carving

It’s time to put the clay aside and start some carving.

I glued a couple of pieces of basswood together to get the right thickness and used the clay sculpture to come up with a pattern to cut out on the bandsaw.  Again, I’m doing the head and body separately.  I’m also going to try to do the body in one piece and so oriented the grain in a way that will run up and down the arms as they’ll be fairly slight once the carving is finished and will require a bit of strength.  Another weak point will be the legs, and the grain is running in the right direction for their strength as well.

I’m cooking up a couple of ideas about the load that he’ll be carrying and how part of that load might be touching the ground so as to provide another contact point for the carving.  More to come on that.

A Little More Detailing

This little hard-working fellow is getting a bit more detail in clay.  I’ve added some facial features, a couple of rolled up cuffs on his open, outer shirt, and some clothes wrinkles here and there to show some stretching going on under that load that he’s going to be carrying.

A little bit more detail and I’ll be ready to start roughing in the wood carving.  This clay sculpting is really helping me visualize what the wood carving will look like and will give me a bit more confidence that I’m removing the “right” pieces of wood once the knives and chisels come out.

You can check the TributesinwoodFlickr Site under the Links heading at the side of this page for a few more photos of the Beach Basset.  Enjoy!

A Little Reading Material

Well, here’s something new for me.

You’ll recall from an earlier post that I fashioned a newspaper out of a light sheet of brass, with some soldering and “newspaper white” painting included.

Now comes time for the printed sections.  I knew that the printing couldn’t be readable given the size of the paper (!) and that I only needed to provide some chicken scratch for the articles, but, I wasn’t completely sure how I was going to do it.  I eventually decided on using a mechanical pencil with an HB lead ( read: small, soft and dark ), followed with a light mist coating of a matte finish urethane to prevent things from smudging.

I’ve completed the front of the paper and even included a couple of advertisements and a “photo” of a doghouse to go along with one of the articles.  I’m pretty pleased with the Daily News so far!
